CHAPTER SEVEN

* * *

THE DISMISSAL IS clear. Suddenly feeling awkward and more naked than before, I slip off the bed without looking at Azoth and hurry across the room on my bare feet.

The door in question opens easily at my touch. Inside, another globe of light on the ceiling illuminates a vast tiled room. Most of it is occupied by a steaming pool of water set into the floor. Heated by the depths of hell? I can only wonder.

I close the door behind me and sag against it. My stomach is churning. Did I displease Azoth, that he sent me away so curtly?

Well, he can’t say I haven’t done as he asked, at least, so the bargain is still on even if he isn’t satisfied with me. Despite that fact, my chest still hurts.

I should have guarded my heart better. The men in my own world didn’t even want me. Once Azoth is done reaping the last of my virtue, he won’t want me, either. His tenderness, his attention? It’s only because I am pure. Or rather, because I was.

I push away from the door. My knees are weak from our latest feverish coupling. I’ll probably be sore for weeks after tonight. With some effort, I walk over to the pool and dip in a toe. It’s almost too hot, but it also feels amazing. I ease my abused body into the water until it laps at my throat, then sit on one of the ledges inside. I sigh and close my eyes, tipping my head back to rest on the edge. I could fall asleep right here. If I drowned, it would still be a glorious way to die.

Maybe that’s the trick, though—a way to lull me into a false sense of security, make me fail to hold to my end of the bargain. Azoth said to clean up, not wallow in the hot pool for an hour. So I have to do as he asked, and be quick about it.

Sighing, I scrub my body clean. The hot water burns against the raw place between my legs, but otherwise it does wonders for my overtaxed muscles. With great reluctance, I finish and climb out of the pool. There are fluffy white towels resting on a table made of a pale silver-gray wood I don’t recognize. I towel dry, stifling a yawn. Since my clothes are thoroughly shredded back in the other room, I wrap the towel around my body before exiting.

Azoth is where I left him, but the sheets on the bed have been magically changed, and the curtains tucked away into their ornate golden holders. The demon himself is resting on his back, wings lazily stretched out on either side of him. Their span is so broad that when he lies like that, the feathery appendages spill off the mattress and whisper across the marble floor.

I hesitate at the edge of the room, but he rolls his head over to look at me and he crooks a finger. “Come here, little mouse.
